fMRI and anorexia nervosa

Background: Over the last decade, brain imaging in anorexia nervosa (AN) has increasingly focused on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The method can be used in order to investigate resting state, brain response to different stimuli and cognitive tasks as well as calculating thickness of different brain structures.

Aim: To explore abnormalities in specific cortical networks for perception of social touch as well as subjective tactile perception in individuals with anorexia nervosa. To assess resting state and cortical thickness in anorexia nervosa.

25 girls /women with anorexia nervosa age 16 – 25 and 25 age-matched girls /women were invited to participate. The patients with AN were recruited from the Anorexia Bulimia Clinic at Queen Silvia Children University Hospital in Gothenburg. The individuals underwent fMRI assessment and a robot brushed all participants on the forearm in order to investigate the brain’s reaction to social touch. All AN and comparison individuals completed the following questionnaires: Beck depression inventory (BDI), Social touch questionnaire (STQ), Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), Autism spectrum quotient (AQ), Edinburgh handedness inventory (EH) and Toronto alexithymia scale (TAS-20). All comparison individuals were interviewed using the eating disorder module of the SCID-I (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders) in order to rule out current or previous eating disorders.

Results: All individuals have been included and assessed. The results have been presented in three manuscripts and will be submitted to scientific journals.
