The disability complex of early onset epilepsies

Participants: Rod Scott, Brian Neville, Colin Reilly, Patricia Atkinson, Leanne Menlove & Christopher Gillberg.

Background: Few studies have looked at the full complexity of neurodevelopmental disorders presenting in early onset epilepsy. There is also a lack of information on the needs of parents of children with early onset epilepsy.

Methods:
• Children with epilepsy (0-6 years) will be identified in an area of the south of England and will undergo psychological assessment including measures of development and behavior. A control group matched for age and gender will undergo the same assessments.
• Parents of children with epilepsy and controls will undergo assessment of parental wellbeing and stress
• Parents of children with epilepsy will participate in a focus group to help identify the needs of parents of young children with epilepsy.

Results: Data collection has commenced (September 2014) and will continue until 2016. Results will be available in 2016 and 2017.
