PROFILE

Ola H. Skjeldal is a neurologist specialised in both adult and child neurology and habilitation. Since 1993, he is a Professor of Paediatric Neurology at the University of Oslo. Throughout most of his career he has been working at the Department of Child Neurology in Oslo University Hospital. He has been the head of this Department for several years. He has also been Head of Research at Drammen Hospital outside Oslo. He has been active as a researcher since the 1980s. He has particularly been engaged in clinical research in the field of neurometabolic diseases, genetic syndromes and neurodevelopmental disorders. In 1989, Ola H. Skjeldal was awarded the Forsberg Prize for his scientific work with metabolic diseases. The same year he stayed at the Kennedy Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he participated in research on peroxisomal disorders. In 1999 he was a visiting Professor at the Paediatric department at the University of Alabama, Birmingham where he was particularly engaged in research on Rett syndrome. Ola H. Skjeldal is still working as a clinical child neurologist. He still supervises PhD students and his research is essentially about Rett syndrome and autism. Recently, Skjeldal was one of the initiators of a new research group in the "Sykehuset Innlandet" who is going to work with neurodevelopmental disorders in children, especially in the fields of education and research. Skjeldal is also a member of the Norwegian Research Ethics committee. He has published 160 scientific articles and has also published several textbooks.
