Nouchine Hadjikhani awarded Life Watch award

News: Jun 03, 2016

Professor Nouchine Hadjikhani at the GNC has received the Niclas Öberg Life Watch Award (300,000 SEK). The Award is given to an outstanding researcher in the field of autism. This is the fourth time that a GNC researcher has been awarded the Prize. Nouchine Hadjikhani is a world leading researcher in the field of functional imaging in autism and related conditions. She has, among several other things, shown that people with autism perceive pain in other people in the same way and at the same level that “normal” people do (up until her study most people believed that those affected by autism did not recognise other people´s pain). She has also shown that young individuals with autism improve their function in certain brain areas when they are treated with a medication that draws chloride out of nerve cells (and hence, to an extent, probably normalises the GABA-glutamate balance in the brain). Both these types of findings will possibly have far-reaching positive consequences for everyday life functioning and medical interventions in autism.
