News: Aug 09, 2016

Maria Råstam Bergström is MD and Senior professor at Lund University. In 2015 she was appointed Visiting professor at the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre.

Maria Råstam Bergström went to Medical School at University of Gothenburg and in 1980 she got her MD degree. Ten years later, in 1990, she received her degree as University of Gothenburg Doctor of Medicine (=PhD) based on the thesis “Anorexia nervosa in Swedish urban teenagers”. Professor Christopher Gillberg was her supervisor during her PhD studies. The thesis is an epidemiological study of teenage-onset anorexia nervosa in Gothenburg. The study is still frequently cited thanks to a very thorough and rigorous screening procedure.
The individuals with anorexia nervosa, their matched healthy comparison cases and all mothers were thoroughly examined/interviewed and the thesis included in addition to the prevalence study also papers on premorbid problems/morbidity, personality, comorbidity and analyses of chromosomes and urine peptides. The thesis was well received even outside Sweden and Professor Råstam was invited to give lectures about her impressive epidemiological study both nationally and internationally.

Maria Råstam Bergström became Associate professor at University of Gothenburg in 1996. In 2008 she was appointed Full professor in child and adolescent psychiatry at Lund University. The post has been associated with a post as senior consultant at Region Skåne. Since 2016 she is Senior professor at the same University. Clinically Maria Råstam has worked as senior consultant at the Child Neuropsychiatry Clinic (CNC) at Queen Silvia’s Children University Hospital in Gothenburg between 1992 and 2008. Between 2000 and 2006 she was the head of the prestigious Adult project at the CNC, where pioneer work was conducted regarding work ups and treatment of adult people with autism and ADHD. The assignment also included educating the majority of the Swedish adult psychiatrists in terms of autism and ADHD.

Since 1996 Professor Råstam Bergström has been the Principal investigator in the to date only prospective long term follow-up of a case-controlled, community-based sample of adolescent-onset anorexia nervosa in international anorexia nervosa literature. The sample consists of the same individuals taking part in her original epidemiological study published in her thesis. The individuals are currently undergoing a fourth examination 30 years after anorexia nervosa onset.

Maria Råstam Bergström has been involved from the start in 2003 in the longitudinal Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden (CATSS). She is the PI of the ongoing clinical branch examining nine year-old twins.

Professor Råstam Bergström has several international collaborators including Professor Cynthia M. Bulik, Dept of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US and KI, Stockholm; Professor Marion Leboyer, INSERM U513, Université de Paris XII, Créteil and Professor Thomas Bourgeron, Human Genetics and Cognitive Functions, Institut Pasteur, Paris.

Maria Råstam Bergström is currently the main supervisor of six PhD students and co-supervisor of another five PhD students. She is an elected member of Eating Disorders Research Society (only the 185 most renowned researchers in the eating disorders field in the world have been elected), member of ANGI SAC (Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative Scientific Advisory Council), PI Cynthia Bulik, and member of the European Network of adult ADHD. She has published more than 110 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals.
